The Boeing 747-400ERF (Extended Range Freighter) is the freighter version of -400ER launched in 2001. The -400ER model is a significant aircraft type achieving maximum weight via structural modification and modified landing gear. The B747-400ERF is very similar to the B747-400F aircraft type except for increased extended range capability which makes it a very preferred freighter aircraft to transport specialized cargo over longer distances with ease.
In comparison with the standard B747-400 freighter the -400ERF has a range of 5,700 miles (9,200 kms) with maximum payload. This accounts for over 600 miles (970 kms) farther than the B747-400F version. The 747-400ERF has a maximum take-off weight of 910,000 pounds (412,769 kg) and a maximum gross payload of over 120 metric tons. The extended range offers airlines additional capabilities, which is vital for longer-distance transportation. The ERF aircraft type has a strengthened wide fuselage and a maximum fuel capacity of 216,846 litres.
Featuring a nose door and a large side door, the aircraft is a logical choice globally for sophisticated cargo movements across long distances. The nose door loading capability, a unique feature of this type of aircraft gives airline companies the capability to move customer shipment of any length, which is not possible on the B777 freighter types. The additional freighter capacity helps carry lengthy, odd-sized, bulk, and delicate cargo across the globe. This special lengthy piece loading capability makes the aircraft a vital freighter provider for oil & gas, manufacturing, automobile, and other heavy industries. This aircraft is also particularly suitable for pharmaceuticals, seafood, perishables, and other cold chain shipments.
Recently, two B747-400Fs (N663CA & N537CA) aircraft joined the National Airlines fleet as the 7th and 8th freighter. With this addition, National is better equipped to offer specialized charter cargo capabilities to various new industries and customer groups.
